Music: MGL

Mark Gabriel Little (MGL) is a composer based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He performs live music and is a frequent collaborator with Maura Garcia Dance. His work builds on a variety of traditional and contemporary musical styles, incorporates both acoustic and synthetic elements, and combines abstract, rhythmic, and melodic elements. The music composition, “Color of the Earth” is designed to transport the listener through the earth, deep underground. The poem which fuels both choreography and music is reproduced abstracted here as a purely rhythmic element. The last section is modeled on a traditional Cherokee stomp dance. The bowed strings of the opening section of “Ode to the Sun” evoke the rays of a rising sun. The melodic progression of the recorder is a lyrical prayer to the sun, floating over a plucked rhythm representing the daytime tasks of a traditional life (washing fabrics, carrying water, grinding corn, etc.).

STILL ONE WITH THE LAND
As Tribes take steps to protect and cultivate key natural resources, they inspire Tribal members to continue their individual traditions of cultivating the earth and vis-à-vis. The core of my creative design process was to focus on the creation of a costume design that would allow Maura's dance to reflect how life comes full circle. To the Cherokee, the woodpecker is a colorful symbol and a bold reminder of the mental, spiritual and physical modes of sustenance and healing. The wise woodpecker is able to lead men to healing medicine.
S-gi-nu-s-de-s-di, May it be so.
